2004 Accomplishments

Tree Planting & Adopt-a-Green Space

  • Planted 53 street trees and coordinated volunteers for the annual street tree planting All trees were from the Burlington Community Tree Nursery, which required lifting them prior to transplanting. Nursery trees are monitored over the summer for their general health status.
  • Maintained memorial trees planted in 2002, and assessed health status of nursery trees planted in 2001. Nursery trees are inspected annually to assess growth and health. Memorial trees were mulched and watered.
  • Maintained Perkins Pier Greenspace
    Organized volunteers to assist with weeding, pruning, flower planting, litter removal, and spring cleanup in pocket park.
  • Community Education and Outreach

  • Set up independent official Branch Out Burlington! website (www.BranchOutBurlington.org) Updated site regularly to announce BOB! events and provide other tree related information for the public and showcase trees selected in the annual Awesome Tree Contest.
  • Developed and conducted after-school educational program on trees supported by VT Dept. of Forests & Parks for Inner City grant program.
  • Organized Summer Tree Walk in the Old North End led by Nancy Knox and Warren Spinner Over 35 people attended.
  • Prepared and printed BOB! brochure for Old North End Tree Walk Brochure was handed out at the walk and other BOB! events.
  • Coordinated Annual Burlington Awesome Tree Contest and arranged award ceremony Over 30 entries were received, award ceremony was covered by local TV news.
  • Organized annual meeting with lecture by Warren Spinner highlighting past winners of the Awesome Tree Contest attended by about 45 adults and children.
  • Represented BOB! at several tree-related events (e.g., Arbor Day events, Preservation Burlington meeting)
  • Burlington Community Tree Nursery (BCTN)

  • Planted 115 trees in the BCTN for future planting on the street and continued managing current plantings, including weed control and pest management.
  • Prepared and printed BOB! brochure describing the Trees at the Burlington Community Tree Nursery
  • Produced BOB! refrigerator magnet as door prize for all volunteers participating in tree planting
  • Produced hats and tote bags with the BOB! logo for all tree planting team leaders and Tree Keepers.
  • Submitted proposals to National Tree Trust for continued support and expansion of nursery activities. Award decision pending.
  • Burlington Community Seedling Nursery (BCSN)

  • Established seedling nursery, including collecting local seeds, pretreating and planting. Standard seed propagation procedures are being developed.
  • Burlington Tree Keeper Program (BTKP)

  • Established program for interested citizens to provide ongoing care of trees planted along the street and recruited over 15 participants.
  • Organized Tree Keeper training program and compiled educational materials for the participants.
  • Produced Tree Keeper Program brochure
  • Set up and coordinated Tree Keeper email listserver to facilitate communication about critical tree issues among Tree Keepers, the city arborist, state urban forestry personnel and BOB! members.
  • Program Administration and Development

  • Sent out monthly minutes to BOB! members
  • Wrote grants to support tree-related and educational activities that generated $22,500.
  • Served on the Vermont Urban and Community Forestry Council (UCFC)
  • Prepared regular budget and grant reports for granting organizations
