2005 Accomplishments
Tree Planting and Care & Adopt-a-Green Space
Planted 72 street trees and coordinated volunteers for the annual street tree planting
All trees were from the Burlington Community Tree Nursery (BCTN), which required lifting them prior to
transplanting. Nursery trees are monitored over the summer for their general health status.
Inspected street trees originating from the BCTN in the spring and fall. All trees are checked for 3 years
after transplanting and measured to monitor tree growth over time.
Maintained Perkins Pier Greenspace
Organized volunteers to assist with weeding, pruning, flower planting, litter removal, and spring cleanup
in pocket park.
Community Education and Outreach
Maintained and expanded official Branch Out Burlington! website (www.BranchOutBurlington.org)
Updated site regularly to announce BOB! events and provide other tree related information for the
public.
Organized Summer Tree Walk on the UVM Green led by Nancy Knox.
Over 35 people attended.
Prepared and printed BOB! brochure in association with UVM students for UVM Green Tree Walk.
Brochure was handed out at the walk and other BOB! events.
Coordinated Annual Burlington Awesome Tree Contest and arranged award ceremony.
Over 30 entries were received, award ceremony was covered by local TV news.
Represented BOB! at several tree-related events (e.g., Arbor Day events, VT Tree Warden meeting)
Burlington Community Tree Nursery (BCTN)
Planted 135 trees in the BCTN for future planting on the street and continued managing current plantings, including weed control and pest management.
Produced BOB! refrigerator magnet as door prize for all volunteers participating in tree planting
Produced hats and tote bags with the BOB! logo for all tree planting team leaders and Tree Keepers.
Submitted proposals to National Tree Trust for continued support and expansion of nursery activities. Award decision pending.
Burlington Tree Keeper Program (BTKP)
Continued program for interested citizens to provide ongoing care of trees planted along the street and
recruited over 25 participants.
Organized and held Tree Keeper training program with lecture by Danielle Fitzko and Warren Spinner. Attended by
over 27 adults and children.
Produced handout for seeking corporate sponsors for Tree Keeper Program.
Coordinated Tree Keeper email listserver to facilitate communication about critical tree issues among
Tree Keepers, the city arborist, state urban forestry personnel and BOB! members.
Burlington Community Seedling Nursery (BCSN)
Maintained seedling nursery, including collecting local seeds, pretreating and planting.
Standard seed propagation procedures are being developed.
