Tree Gator

Scientific Name: Quercus robur × Quercus bicolor ‘Nadler’

Common Name: Kindred Spirit® Oak

Kindred Spirit® Oak is a unique, columnar hybrid oak prized for its exceptionally narrow growth habit, making it an outstanding choice for tight urban spaces, streetscapes, and any landscape where height is desired without added width. This cultivar is a cross between English oak (Quercus robur) and swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor), combining the best traits of each species.

Reaching a mature height of 30–40 ft and a width of only 6–8 ft, Kindred Spirit® maintains a strongly upright, symmetrical form with a dense branching structure. Its glossy, deep green leaves are resistant to powdery mildew, a common issue with many oaks. Leaves transition to soft yellow tones in autumn, providing a gentle fall display.

This oak’s hybrid parentage contributes to its vigor, adaptability, and excellent pest and disease resistance. It performs well in clay soils, urban pollution, and a range of moisture conditions, including occasional wet sites. The tree is a valuable wildlife resource, providing habitat and supporting native pollinators and insects.

Kindred Spirit® thrives in full sun and is hardy in zones 4–9. Its narrow profile, strong resistance to common oak issues, and year-round visual appeal make it an ideal addition to residential yards, narrow side yards, urban landscapes, or formal plantings that require vertical accents without overpowering the space.
