Tree Keeper Program
Be Part of the
Green Action!
Do you have space in the greenbelt in front of your home or business in Burlington? With the Tree Keeper Program, you can receive a tree from Branch Out Burlington’s Community Tree Nursery and contribute to Burlington's urban forest by giving it the simple care it needs to thrive.
What is the Tree Keeper Program?
Each year, trees from the Community Tree Nursery are planted along Burlington’s streets, but the first year is critical for their establishment. Through the Tree Keeper Program, residents are matched with trees, providing them with basic care to ensure their growth. In addition to a tree, Tree Keepers receive free training from local experts, helping Community Nursery trees grow and beautify neighborhoods.
Who Can Be a Tree Keeper?
Anyone with an interest in caring for trees can join, regardless of age or experience. After you apply, the city arborist will inspect your site to determine if a tree can be planted there and recommend the best type of tree. If the greenbelt is too narrow, a tree may be planted in your front yard through an easement agreement with the city. In spring, new Tree Keepers attend a seminar on proper tree care.
What Does a Tree Keeper Do?
Plant: Help plant trees along your street on the Annual Community Tree Planting Day.
Water: Water your tree weekly. The added water cost is minimal but essential to the tree’s growth.
Mulch: Keep the base of your tree free from weeds and add mulch as needed.
Watch: Check for any issues like damage or discolored foliage, and alert the city arborist if you spot a problem.
Tree Keepers are also encouraged to look out for other city trees in their neighborhood and report any concerns.
Why Become a Tree Keeper?
There are countless benefits to having a tree nearby:
Trees release oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, and filter air pollutants.
Trees increase property values, provide shade, and reduce winter wind.
Trees create habitats for birds and other wildlife.
Tree Keepers learn valuable tree care skills that can be used in other gardening projects.
Inspiring Young Tree Keepers
In 2008, young Jensen Daly chose a tree for his birthday and collected donations to support Branch Out Burlington! He watered it all summer, and today, that tree stands tall and healthy. Similarly, in 2012, Will Sightler and his family devoted over 100 hours to caring for trees across 9 miles of streets, pruning and weeding to keep the urban canopy healthy.
